Wonton Soup

Wonton Soup

Wonton soup is a traditional Chinese soup delicacy with a long history. It is said that wontons first originated in the Han Dynasty, and have been loved for their thin skin, tender filling, clear broth, and delicious flavor. Different regions have different names and characteristics, such as Sichuan's "chaoshou" and Guangdong's "wonton". Clean shrimp and devein, dice half and keep half whole. Peel and dice water chestnuts, chop Chinese chives, mince ginger. Season ground pork with light soy sauce, cooking wine, salt, and white pepper, stir clockwise until elastic.

2

Mix filling

Add diced shrimp, water chestnuts, chopped chives, and minced ginger to the pork filling, drizzle with sesame oil and mix well. Be careful not to overmix to maintain the texture of ingredients for richer taste.

3

Wrap wontons

Take one wonton wrapper, place appropriate amount of filling (about 1 teaspoon), fold diagonally into a triangle. Seal the two corners together to form a ingot shape. Wrap all wontons in sequence.

4

Prepare broth

Bring water to boil in a pot, add seaweed, cilantro sections, salt, and sesame oil for seasoning. You can also use broth made from chicken bones or pork bones for more delicious flavor.

5

Cook wontons

Bring water to boil in another pot, add wontons, gently push with a spoon to prevent sticking. After boiling, add half a bowl of cold water, repeat twice. When wontons float and become translucent, remove from water.

6

Serve and enjoy

Place cooked wontons in seasoned broth bowls, sprinkle with a little white pepper and cilantro for garnish. Can be served with vinegar, chili oil and other seasonings.

💡Making Tips

  • There are many different ways to prepare the meat filling. You can choose according to your preference.
  • Stir the meat filling in the same direction to make it elastic and improve texture.
  • Don't use too much filling when wrapping wontons, otherwise they may break during cooking. Seal the opening tightly.
  • Add cold water when cooking wontons to ensure the filling is fully cooked while the wrapper doesn't get mushy.
  • You can make extra wontons and freeze them for convenient cooking anytime.
  • Besides soup, wontons can also be made into fried wontons or cold wontons, each with a unique flavor.
